HSA Strategy: Deductible In, Tax-Free Out

No other account lets you deduct the deposit, grow it untaxed, and pull it out untaxed - if you use it for health care.

The facts

  • 012026 contribution limits: $4,400 self-only coverage, $8,750 family coverage, plus a $1,000 catch-up at 55 (IRS Notice 2026-05 / Rev. Proc. 2025-19).
  • 02Eligibility requires an HSA-qualified high-deductible health plan - for 2026, a minimum deductible of $1,700 self-only / $3,400 family (Rev. Proc. 2025-19).
  • 03Invest the balance: unspent HSA money is yours forever - pay medical costs out of pocket, keep receipts, and reimburse yourself from the HSA years later, tax-free.
  • 04After 65 you can withdraw for any reason at ordinary income rates - it then behaves like a Traditional IRA; used for medical it stays tax-free.
