HSA Limits 2026: $4,400 Self / $8,750 Family - Plus the Rules That Trip People

The 2026 HSA limit is $4,400 for self-only and $8,750 for family coverage - and the $1,000 catch-up must land in the older spouse's OWN account, never the shared one.

The facts

  • 012026 contribution limits (Rev. Proc. 2025-19): $4,400 self-only HDHP coverage, $8,750 family coverage - and every dollar from any source (you, your employer, a relative) counts against the same ceiling.
  • 02Age 55+ catch-up: +$1,000 per person - fixed by statute since 2009, never inflation-indexed. Both spouses 55+? Each gets $1,000, but each must deposit into an HSA in their own name.
  • 032026 HDHP thresholds: minimum deductible $1,700 self-only / $3,400 family; out-of-pocket maximum $8,500 / $17,000. A plan that misses either test is not HSA-eligible regardless of marketing.
  • 04New for 2026: Bronze and Catastrophic ACA marketplace plans can be HSA-eligible - a change that opens HSAs to millions of marketplace enrollees.
  • 05Deadline and trap: you can contribute for 2026 up to April 15, 2027; enrolling in Medicare ends contribution eligibility that month, and the last-month rule (eligible on December 1) locks you into staying eligible through 2027.
