Property Tax Exemptions for Disabled Veterans
The benefit most veterans never claim: real property-tax relief, starting at a 10% rating in many states.
The facts
- 01Texas (Tax Code 11.131): 100% = total homestead exemption; 70-99% = $12,000; 50-69% = $10,000; 30-49% = $7,500; 10-29% = $5,000.
- 02Florida (s.196.24): total & permanent 100% = full homestead exemption; 10%+ = $5,000 off assessed value.
- 03File with your county property appraiser/assessor with your VA award letter - exemptions generally are not retroactive, so file the year you qualify.
- 04Many states stack the veteran exemption on top of the general homestead exemption; surviving-spouse provisions vary by state.
