Filing the Disabled-Veteran Property Tax Exemption
In Florida and Texas, a 100% rating can erase your homestead property tax entirely. Most states offer real money - if you file.
The facts
- 01Texas (Tax Code 11.131): 100% = total exemption on the residence homestead; 70-99% = $12,000 off; 50-69% = $10,000; 30-49% = $7,500; 10-29% = $5,000. Texas Constitution Art. VIII, s.1-b(m).
- 02Florida (s.196.24, Fla. Stat.): total and permanent 100% veterans - full exemption on the homestead; 10%+ disabled veterans get a $5,000 discount off assessed value.
- 03Application is county-level: VA award letter to your county property appraiser/assessor; exemptions generally do not apply retroactively - file the year you qualify.
- 04Many states stack a disabled-veteran exemption with the general homestead exemption; a few (e.g., certain surviving-spouse provisions) extend benefits after death - check your state’s veterans affairs page for the current table.
- 05The award letter is the key document in every state - if your rating changed this year, send the updated letter; upgrades are not automatic.
