Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Alabama

Alabama's low property taxes get lower still: a totally disabled veteran's homestead can be exempt from all state, county, and municipal property tax. Here is how the Act 2013-295 homestead-exemption categories work for veterans.

The rules in Alabama

Who qualifies

Veterans with a total, permanent service-connected disability (100% rating). Other exemption categories cover homeowners 65+ and those with any disability rating — the full exemption tier is the 100% disabled-veteran category.

Benefit

Exemption from all state property taxes and from county and municipal property taxes on the homestead (commonly documented as the homestead plus acreage for disabled veterans — confirm the acreage with your county)

How to apply

File the disability/veteran homestead exemption claim with your county revenue commissioner's office with proof of the VA rating

Watch out

Categories and dollar limits differ by county; some tiers carry income limits. The county applies the category that fits your situation

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
