Veteran Property Tax Exemption — South Carolina
South Carolina's exemption for 100% permanently and totally disabled veterans zeroes out property taxes on your legal residence — and the state expanded eligibility so all qualifying 100% P&T veterans get it, not just certain cohorts.
The rules in South Carolina
Who qualifies
Veterans rated 100% permanently and totally disabled from service connection (or paid at the 100% rate for individual unemployability) who own and occupy their legal residence; surviving spouses qualify in specified cases. Certification runs through the SCDOR process with VA documentation
Benefit
Exemption from all property taxes on the legal residence (the dwelling and the lot) under S.C. Code 12-37-220(B)(19) — plus separate homestead-exemption benefits at 65+ or with qualifying disabilities
How to apply
File with your county assessor with the VA certification and residence documentation (the SCDOR's veterans flyer walks through the certification chain)
Watch out
The exemption applies to the legal residence only — rental and business property stays fully taxable; the 2022+ expansion means veterans denied in earlier eras should re-check eligibility

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
