Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Michigan

Michigan's Disabled Veterans Exemption is the full ride: 100% of the property taxes on your principal residence, for veterans the VA has rated 100% permanently and totally disabled — including individual unemployability.

The rules in Michigan

Who qualifies

A disabled veteran certified by the VA as 100% permanently and totally disabled (including paid at the 100% rate for individual unemployability), or their unremarried surviving spouse (MCL 211.7b)

Benefit

Exemption from property tax on real property used and owned as a homestead — the whole tax, not a slice of value

How to apply

File the State Tax Commission Affidavit for Disabled Veterans Exemption (Form 5107) with your local assessor or treasurer

Watch out

The exemption must be claimed — it is not automatic. If your rating came through mid-year, ask the assessor about prorating

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
