Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Texas

Texas is the heavyweight: Tax Code Section 11.131 exempts 100% of the appraised value of the residence homestead of veterans awarded 100 percent disability compensation — by rating or by individual unemployability — and Texas has no state income tax, so this is the whole state-tax game.

The rules in Texas

Who qualifies

Veterans awarded 100 percent disability compensation from the VA — a 100 percent disability rating or a determination of individual unemployability — for their residence homestead. Surviving spouses (65+, or any age where the veteran had a 100% rating at death) continue the exemption

Benefit

Exemption of the total appraised value of the residence homestead (Tax Code 11.131). Separately, Tax Code 11.22 provides rating-tiered exemptions of $5,000 to $12,000 of assessed value that apply to any property you own — an eligible veteran can hold both

How to apply

File the residence homestead exemption application (Form 50-114) with your county appraisal district — deadline April 30, and you may back-claim up to five years after the delinquency date

Watch out

The 11.131 full exemption applies only to the homestead; the 11.22 tiered exemption is the one that reaches rental or business property. A surviving spouse who moves carries the exemption forward at the prior home's dollar amount

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
