Veteran Property Tax Exemption — North Carolina

North Carolina's disabled-veteran benefit is technically an exclusion: the first $45,000 of the appraised value of the permanent residence is excluded from taxation for qualifying disabled veterans.

The rules in North Carolina

Who qualifies

Disabled veterans rated 100% permanent and total by the VA (or paid at the 100% rate for individual unemployability), or qualifying surviving spouses; the Honoring Sacrifice expansion added prequalification while a VA claim is pending

Benefit

Exclusion of the first $45,000 of the appraised value of the permanent residence (N.C. Gen. Stat. 105-277.10)

How to apply

Obtain the NCDVA-9 certification from the NC Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, then apply with your county assessor (annual application; prequalification available)

Watch out

$45,000 against appraised value is modest against NC home values — the certification step via NC DMVA is the part owners miss

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
