Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Mississippi
Mississippi's tiered homestead exemption — including a FULL exemption from all homestead property taxes for veterans with a service-connected total disability.
The rules in Mississippi
Tier 3 — full exemption
Honorably discharged American veterans with a VA service-connected TOTAL disability are exempt from all property taxes on their qualifying homestead. The exemption extends to their unremarried surviving spouses
Also Tier 3
Honorably discharged veterans at least 90 years old on or before January 1 of the claim year (and their unremarried surviving spouses); unremarried surviving spouses of service members killed or died on active duty
Tier 2 — partial
Homeowners who are 65+ or totally disabled (disability proof per DOR rules — including VA-related documentation and other federal classifications) are exempt from taxes on the first $7,500 of assessed value (roughly the first $75,000 of true value)
Tier 1
Everyone else: a credit of up to $300 against homestead taxes
How to apply
Apply once with the county Tax Assessor where the home is located — reapply only if eligibility changes (marriage, divorce, death, deed change, or a change in VA benefits status can trigger the need to reapply)
Timing
Eligibility is measured as of January 1 of the year claimed
How it works
Mississippi folds veteran property-tax relief into its tiered homestead exemption system, administered by the county Tax Assessor.

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
