Veteran Property Tax Exemption — West Virginia

West Virginia's Disabled Veteran Real Property Tax Credit is an income-tax credit that refunds property tax: veterans 90-100% permanently and totally disabled can get the first $20,000 of their homestead's assessed value exempt — and 100% P&T veterans get their entire homestead tax back as a credit.

The rules in West Virginia

Who qualifies

Veteran taxpayers who are 90-100% permanently and totally disabled from service connection and own/occupy a West Virginia homestead as of July 1 (W. Va. Code 11-13MM-4); qualifying widowed spouses continue the credit

Benefit

A refundable personal income-tax credit: 100% P&T veterans receive 100% of the property tax paid on the homestead; 90% veterans receive the tax on the first $20,000 of assessed value. It refunds the tax through the income-tax return rather than reducing the tax bill

How to apply

Claim the credit on your West Virginia income-tax return (Schedule M/credit line per TSD-455) after the county assessor certifies the homestead — see TSD-455 for the claim mechanics

Watch out

This is a refund through the return, not a lower tax bill — plan cash flow like Wisconsin's credit; the county assessor certification is step one

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
