Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Washington
Washington folds disabled veterans into its senior/disabled property-tax exemption: veterans receiving VA compensation at a combined service-connected rating of 40% or higher — or with a total rating for a service-connected disability — qualify, with the exemption scaled to household income.
The rules in Washington
Who qualifies
Veterans entitled to and receiving VA compensation at a combined service-connected evaluation rating of 40% or higher, or a total disability rating for a service-connected disability without regard to evaluation percent (including unemployability determinations) — or meeting the senior (61+) / disability-retirement criteria. Surviving spouses/domestic partners 57+ qualify
Benefit
Exemption from all or a portion of excess and regular property taxes, scaling with combined disposable income against the statutory income thresholds (RCW 84.36.381/383) — the exemption removes excess levies and part or all of regular levies depending on the tier
How to apply
File the exemption claim with your county assessor by the assessor's deadline; eligibility continues in later years without annual re-filing until circumstances change
Watch out
This is income-scaled, not automatic — VA disability compensation itself does not count toward combined disposable income, which often decides whether a 100% disabled veteran lands in the top tier; confirm your tier with the assessor

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
