Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Wisconsin
Wisconsin has no property-tax exemption for disabled veterans — instead it refunds 100% of the property tax on your primary residence through a state income-tax credit. Here is how the Veterans and Surviving Spouses Property Tax Credit works.
The rules in Wisconsin
Who qualifies
Veterans rated 100% service-connected disabled by the VA — or paid at the 100% rate based on Individual Unemployability (IU) — and their unremarried surviving spouses. No credit below 100%.
Benefit
A refundable state income-tax credit equal to 100% of the property taxes paid during the year on your Wisconsin primary dwelling plus up to one acre of surrounding land. Your tax bill is not reduced — the money comes back on your Wisconsin return (Form 1 or Form 1NPR), even if you owe no state income tax. DOR guidance states there is no limit on the amount that may be claimed
Verify first
Eligibility must be verified by the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) before you claim the credit
How to apply
Obtain WDVA verification of your 100% rating, then claim the credit on your Wisconsin income tax return
Watch out
You cannot also claim the homestead credit, school property-tax credit, or farmland preservation credit for the same year; the DOR FAQ also covers claiming the credit when the VA backdated your rating
How it works
Wisconsin has no property-tax exemption for disabled veterans. Instead, the Veterans and Surviving Spouses Property Tax Credit refunds the property tax on your primary residence through the state income-tax return.

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
