Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Hawaii

Hawaii's veteran property-tax relief is county-run. Honolulu's totally-disabled-veteran exemption, explained — plus where to go in the other three counties.

How it works

There is no single statewide exemption — each county (Honolulu, Hawaii, Maui, Kauai) administers its own real property tax exemptions for totally disabled veterans and, in some cases, their widow or widower. The state Office of Veterans' Services lists the real property tax exemption for homes owned and occupied as a home by a totally disabled veteran or their widow(er).

Honolulu (City & County of Honolulu):

Other counties: Hawaii, Maui, and Kauai each run their own disabled-veteran exemption programs with their own forms and deadlines — contact your county real property assessment office directly.

  • If you are totally disabled due to injuries sustained while on active duty with the U.S. Armed Forces, your home is eligible for exemption from real property taxes, except the minimum tax.
  • File claim form E-8-10.5 with a physician's certificate of disability in the form the department prescribes.
  • Timing: file on or before June 30 for the first payment, or December 31 for the second payment.
  • The exemption remains in effect as long as you remain totally disabled — or, for the widow or widower of the totally disabled veteran, while unmarried.

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
