Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Indiana

Indiana pairs a base veteran deduction with a big add-on for the totally disabled: a 100% disabled veteran gets the maximum homestead deduction — which takes the full assessed value of the homestead (up to the cap) off the tax roll.

The rules in Indiana

Who qualifies

Veterans with service-connected disabilities. The Disabled Veteran Property Tax Deduction applies to veterans rated totally disabled by the VA (or paid at the 100% rate for IU); a separate base deduction covers other veterans with disabilities

Benefit

A 100% disabled veteran receives the maximum homestead deduction available in the county — effectively removing the homestead's assessed value from taxation. Lower-rating veterans get a base deduction of a fixed assessed-value amount plus the standard $250 deduction

How to apply

File the veteran deduction application (State Form 55286) with your county auditor — bring the VA rating documentation

Watch out

Watch the DVA's guidance on forms and re-application; House Bill 1187 (2026 session) proposed increasing the deduction further — check the current statute before you file

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
