Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Missouri
The honest answer first: Missouri's full property-tax exemption is currently limited to former prisoners of war with a total service-connected disability. Here is what actually exists today — and what is in the pipeline.
The rules in Missouri
Full exemption (narrow)
Former prisoners of war with a total service-connected disability, who own and occupy the homestead as a primary residence (Mo. Const. art. X, § 6). Apply through your county assessor with DD-214/POW proof and a VA letter of total service-connected disability
Property Tax Credit ("circuit breaker")
A state credit for a portion of the real estate taxes or rent you paid — up to $1,100 for owners ($750 for renters) — for certain senior citizens, 100% disabled veterans, and 100% disabled individuals, subject to income limits
How to apply (credit)
File the Missouri Property Tax Credit Claim with the Department of Revenue (online filing available)
In the pipeline
Bills in recent sessions — a 2025 "Disabled Veteran Property Tax Relief Act" (HB 921) and a 2026 "Missouri Disabled Veterans' Homestead Exemption" — have proposed scaling property-tax relief to the VA disability rating. Not law as of this writing; verify current status
How it works
Unlike most states, Missouri has no general property-tax exemption for 100% disabled veterans. Here is what actually exists:

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
