The rules in Maryland

Who qualifies

A veteran with a 100% service-connected permanent & total VA disability rating (or certain unemployability determinations); disabled active-duty service members; generally the surviving spouse (do-not-remarry rules apply — verify)

Benefit

Exemption from real property tax on the primary dwelling and surrounding yard

How to apply

File the State of Maryland property tax exemption application with the State Department of Assessments & Taxation (SDAT) — proof of VA rating and the deed

A 30%+ service-connected rating carries a state hiring preference and other benefits; SDAT and the MD Dept. of Veterans & Military Families can screen you for everything you qualify for

How it works

Maryland offers a FULL exemption from state and local real property tax on the dwelling house and surrounding yard for veterans whom the VA has determined to be 100% service-connected, permanent and total (P&T) disabled. Disabled active-duty service members may also qualify. The exemption generally extends to the surviving spouse.

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
