Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Tennessee

Tennessee doesn't exempt a disabled veteran's property from tax — the state reimburses it. Qualifying 100% P&T disabled veterans get state-funded relief on the first $175,000 of their home's market value, with no income limit.

The rules in Tennessee

Who qualifies

Veterans rated 100% permanently and totally disabled from service connection (or qualifying SMC categories), who own and occupy the home — and their surviving spouses who don't remarry. No annual income limit applies to the disabled-veteran category

Benefit

State-reimbursed property-tax relief on the first $175,000 of the full market value of the home (T.C.A. 67-5-704) — the state pays the county and city for the tax on that value, and the relief is capped by the state's appropriation mechanics, so the amount you actually receive can lag the theoretical benefit

How to apply

Apply through the collecting official (county trustee / city clerk) by April 5, with the annual re-application the program requires

Watch out

Legislation has repeatedly raised the value threshold — check with the Comptroller's office for the current amount; the benefit is a reimbursement, so budget as if the bill is due and treat relief as cash back

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
