Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Ohio

Ohio doubles its homestead exemption for the veterans who need it most: qualifying 100% service-connected disabled veterans get $50,000 of their home's market value exempt — twice the standard $25,000 homestead reduction — with no income test on the veteran tier.

The rules in Ohio

Who qualifies

Veterans rated 100% disabled by the VA (or receiving 100% compensation, including paid at the 100% rate for individual unemployability) who are permanently and totally service-connected — with qualifying combinations of permanent and total service-connected disabilities. Surviving spouses qualify in specified cases

Benefit

Homestead exemption of $50,000 of the home's market value (the standard homestead exemption for seniors/disabled is $25,000) — applied against the residence homestead

How to apply

File the Homestead Exemption Application for Disabled Veterans and Surviving Spouses (Form DTE 105(I)) with your county auditor — Ohio eliminated annual re-application; one application covers future years unless circumstances change

Watch out

The veteran tier is disability-based, not income-tested — unlike the senior homestead tier. Bring your VA rating letter; the county auditor processes the reduction

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
