Veteran Property Tax Exemption — South Dakota

South Dakota exempts up to $200,000 of the assessed value of a qualifying 100% disabled veteran's home — and paraplegic veterans get a full exemption, no dollar cap.

The rules in South Dakota

Who qualifies

Veterans rated by military or VA authorities as 100% permanently and totally disabled from service connection, who own and occupy the property as a homestead; unremarried surviving spouses qualify. A separate program fully exempts paraplegic veterans' dwellings

Benefit

Exemption of up to $200,000 of the assessed value of the single-family dwelling (SD DOR Relief Programs page); paraplegic veterans: full exemption of the dwelling

How to apply

Apply with your county Director of Equalization — the application runs through the county with VA certification; your local Veterans Service Officer can help assemble it

Watch out

The $200,000 applies to assessed value, and South Dakota assesses at full and true value — the amount comes straight off the value your taxes are computed on; verify your county's assessment level

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
