Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Nebraska

Nebraska's homestead exemption program covers qualifying veterans through statutory tiers — a full exemption for total disability combined with specific qualifying conditions, partial exemptions on a sliding scale for others, and a firm August 1 filing deadline.

The rules in Nebraska

Who qualifies

Veterans with total disability from service connection: those with qualifying additional conditions (such as loss or loss of use of limbs, or blindness) can receive a full homestead exemption; other totally disabled veterans and partially disabled veterans may receive partial exemptions on a sliding scale — household income limits apply to the partial tiers. Unremarried surviving spouses qualify (Neb. Rev. Stat. 77-3506)

Benefit

Full or partial homestead exemption per the statutory tiers, applied to the homestead's value

How to apply

File with the county assessor February 1 through August 1, annually, with VA and income documentation where required

Watch out

Household income determines eligibility for the partial tiers and the exemption percentage — read the DOR's Homestead Exemption Information Guide before assuming eligibility

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
