Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Florida

Florida stacks three veteran property-tax levers, and the top one is total: a full homestead exemption for veterans rated 100% permanently and totally disabled from service connection.

The rules in Florida

Who qualifies

Full exemption: honorably discharged veterans certified as totally and permanently disabled from service connection (100% P&T). Partial $10,000 exemption: veterans with a 10%+ service-connected disability. Discount: combat-disabled veterans 65+

Benefit

Full exemption of the homestead's assessed value for 100% P&T (s. 196.241); $10,000 exemption for 10%+ disabled ex-servicemembers (raised from $5,000 in 2024) (s. 196.24); combat-veteran discount (s. 196.242)

How to apply

File with your county property appraiser — typically the DR-501 exemption application with VA documentation; homestead requirements apply

Watch out

The $10,000 increase first applies to 2025 tax rolls — confirm the current figure with your property appraiser; surviving-spouse and prorated-refund rules exist for mid-year purchases

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
