Veteran Property Tax Exemption — North Dakota

North Dakota's Disabled Veteran's Property Tax Credit scales with your rating: $4,500 of taxable value off at 50%, up to $9,000 at 100% — applied against the homestead. North Dakota assesses at 50% of true value, so $9,000 of taxable value is roughly $18,000 of market value.

The rules in North Dakota

Who qualifies

Veterans with an armed forces service-connected disability of 50% or greater for the application year — or an extrascheduler rating, including individual unemployability, that results in payment at the 100% rate — with an honorable discharge (or retirement), who reside on and hold an ownership interest in the property

Benefit

Reduction of taxable value by rating tier: 50% = $4,500; 60% = $5,400; 70% = $6,300; 80% = $7,200; 90% = $8,100; 100% = $9,000. A spouse receiving VA dependency and indemnity compensation receives 100% of the credit; two married disabled veterans cap at $9,000 combined

How to apply

The Office of State Tax Commissioner notes the credit is automatically applied for those who qualify — but an application (SFN 24770) exists for establishing eligibility; coordinate with your county director of tax equalization if the credit is not on your assessment

Watch out

The benefit runs on taxable value, not market value — at North Dakota's 50% assessment ratio the dollars are roughly double the table number; confirm your county's figure

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
