Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Illinois

Illinois runs three veteran homestead exemptions side by side, and the Standard Homestead Exemption for Veterans with Disabilities is the one most owners miss: up to $5,000 off the equalized assessed value, more for specially adapted homes.

The rules in Illinois

Who qualifies

Standard Homestead Exemption for Veterans with Disabilities (35 ILCS 200/15-169): veterans with a VA-certified service-connected disability — $2,500 EAV reduction for 30–49%, $5,000 for 50–69%, and full exemption for 70%+ ratings. Specially Adapted Housing Exemption (15-165): full exemption for SAH-grant homes. Returning Veteran's Homestead Exemption (15-172): $5,000 for two years after returning from active duty

Benefit

EAV reductions of $2,500–$5,000 (EAV is roughly one-third of market value, so a $5,000 EAV cut can shield ~$15,000 of market value) — or full exemption for SAH and 70%+ veterans

How to apply

File with your chief county assessment office each year — Illinois requires the veteran relief to be filed annually

Watch out

Because EAV is a fraction of market value, the dollar effect feels smaller than it looks; the 70%+ tier and SAH exemption are the big ones — bring your VA rating letter

How it works

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
