Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Maine

Maine's veteran exemptions are modest fixed amounts, but the disability tier is worth claiming: a veteran receiving 100% disability compensation qualifies for an additional $6,000 exemption, and proposals have floated $50,000–$100,000 tiers.

The rules in Maine

Who qualifies

Veterans 62+ who served during a recognized war period, or veterans who are 100% disabled, receiving total disability pension, or paraplegic — plus surviving spouses, minor children, and parents in some tiers

Benefit

$6,000 exemption for qualifying 100%-disabled veterans (statutory veteran exemption base is $6,000, with the additional disability $6,000 stacking — confirm the total with your assessor); paraplegic veterans qualify for a much larger $50,000 exemption

How to apply

File with your municipal assessor by April 1 with discharge and VA documentation

Watch out

These are fixed-dollar exemptions against assessed value — small against Maine home values; legislation to raise the disability tiers has been introduced, so check the current statute

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
