Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Virginia

Virginia exempts the real property — and, since 2021, the personal property — of veterans the VA rates 100% service-connected permanent and total, administered locally by your commissioner of the revenue with Virginia DVS field offices helping through the paperwork.

The rules in Virginia

Who qualifies

Veterans with a VA rating of 100% service-connected permanent and total (or paid at the 100% rate for individual unemployability), or qualifying special monthly compensation categories — plus their surviving spouses

Benefit

Exemption from real property tax on the primary residence and up to one acre (Va. Code 58.1-3219.4), plus a personal-property (vehicle) tax exemption or reduced rate under 58.1-3506(B/8)

How to apply

Apply with your local commissioner of the revenue or equivalent assessing official — DVS field offices and the Virginia Veterans Network help veterans assemble the VA documentation

Watch out

Some older SMC cohorts carried income limits — verify current criteria with DVS; annual filing requirements vary by locality

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
