Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Utah

Utah's Veterans with a Disability property-tax abatement — who qualifies, how much it cuts, and the September 1 county deadline.

The rules in Utah

Who qualifies

Utah resident veteran with a service-connected disability above 10% (no exemption allowed below 10%); the benefit scales with your disability percentage; the unmarried surviving spouse or minor orphans of a qualifying veteran may also qualify

Benefit

An abatement against your primary residence. Publication 36 describes it as the lesser of 50% of the current year's total property tax or a maximum of $1,412; the Tax Commission's 2025 relief table expresses it as a credit of up to $521,620 in taxable value, scaled to your disability percentage. The exact dollar effect depends on your county's rate — confirm your number with the county before you count on it

Bonus

The same rating can abate motor-vehicle uniform fees and property tax (Tax Commission form PT-32)

How to apply

File form PT-25, Veteran with a Disability Property Tax Exemption Application, with your county auditor/assessor with proof of service and VA disability documentation

Deadline

September 1, every year

How it works

Utah law provides a mandatory property-tax abatement for veterans with a VA service-connected disability rating above 10 percent, administered by your county and scaled to your disability percentage.

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
