Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Rhode Island

Rhode Island's veteran property-tax exemptions are set in state law but delivered by your city or town — R.I. Gen. Laws 44-3-4 sets minimum exemption amounts, and municipalities routinely grant more. Ask your assessor for the local numbers.

The rules in Rhode Island

Who qualifies

Veterans who served in the armed forces (including Guard/National Guard service in specified periods), disabled veterans certified by the VA as 100% disabled from service connection, Gold Star parents/spouses, and unmarried surviving spouses — each with its own exemption tier

Benefit

State-law minimum exemptions of assessed value per category (the standard veteran exemption, a doubled amount for disabled veterans certified 100%, and larger amounts where towns vote them). Example: Middletown grants $51,555 for VA-certified 100%-disabled veterans. Exact dollars vary by municipality

How to apply

Apply with your city or town assessor with discharge (DD-214) and VA certification; re-application requirements are local — some towns require annual re-filing for disability tiers

Watch out

Because amounts are local, the same rating is worth very different dollars in different towns — and motor-vehicle exemptions for veterans are a separate claim on the same application

Not yet rated? Start there

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
