Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Iowa
Iowa's Disabled Veteran Homestead Property Tax Credit is the full ride: 100% of the property tax on the homestead comes back for qualifying totally disabled veterans — and the income test that used to apply is gone.
The rules in Iowa
Who qualifies
A qualifying disabled veteran (100% service-connected, totally disabled) who also qualifies for the homestead tax credit under Iowa Code chapter 425 — plus unremarried surviving spouses
Benefit
A credit for 100% of the property tax on the homestead, subject to the statutory cap — the Iowa DOR's tax credits page notes the current maximum; the application and the credit run through the county assessor
How to apply
File application form 54-049 with the county assessor by July 1 — applications after July 1 apply to the following assessment year
Watch out
No annual reapplication is needed anymore, and the old income restriction no longer applies — but the assessor may ask for current VA documentation (dated within the last 12 months) when you file

Not yet rated? Start there
Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
