Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Montana

Montana's Disabled Veteran (MDV) Property Tax Assistance Program cuts the tax rate on your home by up to 100% — but it is income-tested and re-earned every April 15.

The rules in Montana

Who qualifies

A veteran rated 100% disabled from a service-connected injury (VA documentation) — or the unmarried surviving spouse of a deceased veteran who was 100% disabled

Property

The home (or mobile/manufactured home) you own or are buying under contract and live in as your primary residence at least 7 months of the year. On agricultural or forest land, only the one-acre homesite qualifies

Benefit

A reduction in the property tax rate on the home — up to 100% — tiered by income and marital status. Lower income = bigger reduction; above the top income ceiling for your filing status there is no benefit that year (TY2026 ceilings: single $62,598; married/head of household $72,229; unmarried surviving spouse $54,573, based on prior-prior-year federal AGI)

How to apply

File Form MDV (Montana Disabled Veteran Property Tax Relief Application) with the Department of Revenue / your county

Deadline

April 15 each year. Income and ownership/occupancy requirements must be met every year

How it works

Montana's Disabled Veteran (MDV) Property Tax Assistance Program reduces the property tax RATE on the home of a veteran with a 100% service-connected disability — scaled by income and filing status, and re-earned every year.

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
