Veteran Property Tax Exemption — Colorado
Colorado exempts 50% of the first $200,000 of a qualifying disabled veteran's home value from property tax — and since 2024 the application goes straight to your county assessor.
The rules in Colorado
Who qualifies
Honorably discharged veterans with a VA rating of 100% permanent (P&T), 100% through disability retirement administered by DHS or the service departments, or VA individual unemployability (IU) status. Gold Star spouses qualify separately
Benefit
50% exemption on the first $200,000 of actual value of the primary residence — for a typical home that removes up to half of a six-figure value from the tax roll
How to apply
Submit the application with your VA Benefit Summary Letter to the county assessor between January 1 and July 1 of the year you're applying
Watch out
No annual reapplication from the same address unless your VA status changes; moving requires a new application in the January–July window

Every one of these programs hinges on a VA service-connected rating. If you have not filed a claim, that is the starting point — a free, VA-accredited VSO (DAV, American Legion, VFW) will file it for you at no cost. A higher rating unlocks not just property-tax relief but healthcare, income benefits, and — for business owners — SDVOSB contracting eligibility.
